Your little slice of Peru in north Georgia, The Freakin Incan represented their cuisine well and made a good impression! The restaurant is on the smaller side with a warm, informal ambiance that really fits the vibe of the cuisine and service.
What We Ordered
We tried to order a wide selection of menu items to get a good feel for the food The Freakin Incan offers. Here are the dishes we ordered with their menu descriptions:
Papa Rellena – Deep Fried Mashed Potatoes filled with Ground Beef, Raisins, Olives and Boiled Eggs. Garnished with Salsa Criolla
Both the Aji de Pollo & Queso Empanadas
Yucca Fritas – Fried Yucca, similar to large steak fries
Chicharron de Pollo – 10 Marinated & Fried Springer Mt. Chicken Wings with Aji Sauce
Lomo Saltado – Stir Fried Filet Steak, Red Onions, Tomatoes, Cilantro and Aji Amarillo. Served with White Rice & Fries.
Tallarin Saltado – Stir Fried Noodles, Red Onions, Tomatoes, Cilantro and Aji Amarillo. Served with your Choice of Protein.
Seco de Res – Slow Cooked Cilantro Beef Stew served with Canary Beans and White Rice
Ultimately, everything was tasty and enjoyable and the criticisms of the food were slim to none.
My Favorite Dishes at The Freakin Incan
If you aren’t Peruvian, or aren’t familiar with their cuisine, the Papa Rellena’s description probably sounds a little strange. Boiled eggs, olives, and raisins in the same dish may not be a typical combination when you cook, but let me tell you, it really works in this dish! Seriously, even if you’re a little hesitant, I would recommend giving the Papa Rellena a try. If you don’t believe me, take a look at The Freakin Incan’s online menu where each individual menu item has reviews.
I would also highly recommend the Chicharron de Pollo. Not only is it a great price for wings at 10 wings for $13, but they are delightfully crispy. The creamy, yellow Aji sauce that accompanies them was also quite good. I found myself putting the sauce on just about everything on the table.
Last but not least, the Lomo Saltado was also excellent. Lomo Saltado is possibly the most iconic Peruvian dish of all, so it serves as sort of a benchmark for all Peruvian restaurants. After all, can an Italian restaurant be good without having good Spaghetti? Or a Korean restaurant without good Bulgogi? Regardless, the Lomo Saltado at The Freakin Incan passed the test.
Some Criticisms
As I said in my review of onboard dining with Viking River Cruises, a review is not complete without a full picture of the dining experience. Unfortunately, this means that you have to talk about the areas a restaurant can improve as well.
While the food quality was excellent, there were some areas of improvement for The Freakin Incan. For starters, there was some confusion with our order, and we received an entrée we did not ask for. After a little resistance from the waitress, we opted to keep it. Mistakes certainly happen, but this particular waitress did not write down our orders and I think this was the source of the confusion.
Additionally, my dining companions thought that the Tallarin Saltado while tasty and of good quality, needed some more meat to justify its price point.
Finally, these aren’t exactly criticisms, but more warnings. If you’re one of those people that avoids loaded fries or chili cheese fries due to sogginess, you may not like the fries in the Lomo Saltado. This is how the dish is authentically made, so I would encourage you to still try it as-is if you’re on the fence. If it helps, I thought my fries held up pretty well, but some of my dining companions did not enjoy them.
Furthermore, if you aren’t careful, the check can really add up. At a table with five adults, our tab quickly rose to above $250. If you’re budget-conscious, just make sure you’re keeping track of your choices, and you’ll have a great time!
The Final Verdict
The Freakin Incan was a nice spot, and I would encourage you to try it if you come through the Roswell area. While the food quality is excellent, there were minor issues with order accuracy and portion sizes for some dishes, and the check can add up quickly for larger groups. The highlights from the menu including the unique Papa Rellena, crispy Chicharron de Pollo, and the iconic Lomo Saltado, make a return visit well worth it.
